Boson Author

Customer Service

Anyone with experience taking and passing a real exam, such as a standardized college admissions exam or a professional certification or licensure exam, can write a Marketplace practice exam. Examples include practice exams for the GED, SAT, ACT, GRE or GMAT; certification exams for IT technologies; professional licensure exams for engineers, teachers, realtors, etc.; and many others.

Whatever your area of expertise, Boson Exam Publishing offers you a platform for publishing a practice exam to help other professionals or students pass the real exam.

We recommend that you have personal experience taking and passing the exam for which you are writing. If it has been a while since you took the real exam, we recommend that you take it again, if at all possible, to make sure that you are familiar with the testing format and the material covered.

Boson will not pay for you to take the real exam. But with a well-written practice exam, you will have the opportunity to recover your initial investment for the real exam.

The time it takes to write a practice exam varies based on the length of the real exam, the depth of the content included and your level of writing skill. If you determine that you will be writing 150 questions for your practice exam and want to know how long that will take, we recommend writing a sample of questions, such as 20, and timing how long those took you to write. That will give you an idea of how long the rest of the exam will take you to write.

The products that our in-house Boson authors write typically include three full-length practice exams per product. For instance, if a real exam includes 50 questions, our authors will write three practice exams of 50 questions each, for a total of 150 questions in a product. We recommend that you use the same guidelines. You will also want to consider the length and complexity of the individual questions when you are deciding how many questions to write. If the real exam includes 100 simple, one- or two-sentence multiple-choice questions, it may still be easy for you to write three full-length exams. By contrast, if the real exam includes 100 questions that consist of several long paragraphs for just the question portion (not even considering the explanation portion), you may want to write only two full-length exams for one product. Once you commit to becoming a Boson Exam Publishing Author, we will gladly work with you to determine the optimal length for the practice exam that you choose to write.

The amount of money you receive will be based on a royalty structure defined in your Boson Exam Publishing Marketplace Agreement. Since royalties are based on sales, your royalty payments will depend on factors such as the quality of your practice exam, the size of your target market and the demand for your exam. We recommend that you research the potential market before you write your practice exam.

You can title your product whatever you want, as long as it does not violate the Author Conduct Guidelines. However, we recommend that you give your practice exam a title that reflects the vendor and the exam number of the real exam. This is to help customers easily identify your product and match it to their needs. The vendor is the organization that creates the exam. For instance, the Educational Testing Service (ETS) creates the SAT, GRE and TOEFL exams among many others. CompTIA is the organization that creates the IT-related exams such as A+, Network+ and Security+. The exam number, if there is one, is the identification given to the exam by the exam vendor. For example, the most recent version of the CompTIA Network+ exam is numbered N10-007. So if you were writing a practice exam for the real Network+ exam, your exam should have a title similar to Practice Exam for CompTIA Network+ N10-007. You may include your name, a pseudonym or another unique identifier to brand your products provided your name does not infringe the trademarks of any other person or entity. If you choose not to name your product, the default name will be “Marketplace Practice Exam for [Vendor] [Exam Number] [Exam Name]” and may include an ordinal identifier such as #1, #2, etc. if more than one practice exam is available for the same real exam.

The following elements are required for each practice exam question that you write:

  • Question portion – This consists of only the question, whether the question is one sentence, several sentences or several paragraphs.

  • Choices – These will typically be multiple-choice options.

  • Explanation – The real exams won’t include explanations of the correct answers, but explanations are key to writing effective practice exams. We recommend writing several paragraphs to explain why the correct answer is right and why the incorrect answers are wrong. This is your opportunity to educate the customer on the material that the exam covers.

  • References – We encourage you to cite authoritative Web or book references to support the material in your explanations.

The Boson Exam Environment (BEE), which is the software that will be used to deliver your practice exam, supports the following types of questions:

  • Multiple-choice, single-answer
  • Multiple-choice, multiple-answer
  • True/False
  • Fill-in-the-blank (however, the options to fill in the blank must be presented as multiple-choice; the answer cannot be typed in)
  • Special question formats: Drag-and-drop, simulation and case study

Essay questions or other types of questions where the answer must be typed are not supported.

We recommend that you use the question type most often found in the real exam for which you are writing. If that exam contains mainly multiple-choice, single-answer questions, your practice exam should mimic the ratio on the real exam. If that exam contains numerous drag-and-drop questions or other special question formats, please contact us and we will work with you to ensure that those questions are formatted correctly. Additionally, we may be able to create special question types for you as a service.

All of your practice exam content should be submitted in a Microsoft Word 2007 or Microsoft Word 2010 document. Anyone with experience using a word-processing program should be able to easily create content for a Marketplace practice exam. After you commit to becoming a Boson Exam Publishing Author, we will provide you with a template on which you will base your content document.

The formatting of the document is simple. You will need to use styles; here is a brief video that gives you an example of how to use styles in Word 2007. Don’t worry if you do not immediately understand the steps involved. If you need further help learning how to format your content document, Boson will provide more extensive instruction once you decide to become a Boson Exam Publishing Author.

Your practice exam will be sold in software format. The Boson Exam Environment (BEE) is the software that will be used to deliver your practice exam content. Customers will download the BEE software and your practice exam content from the Boson Marketplace.

Not necessarily. Boson Exam Publishing acts as a publisher and does not generally provide exclusivity to particular authors. You are free to create a practice exam that competes with existing practice exams in the Boson Marketplace and other authors are free to compete with your exam if they so choose. By writing the best quality practice exam that you are capable of writing, you can help ensure that your product will outsell the competition.

If you are interested in writing an IT practice exam, particularly one published by Microsoft, Cisco or CompTIA, be aware that it may compete with a Boson ExSim-Max exam simulation for the same exam.

When you have released your completed practice exam to us for publishing in the Boson Exam Environment (BEE), we will publish it and enable you to review your practice exam. You will be responsible for testing and proofing the exam to make sure that all content is present and appears as you intended. If you are satisfied with its appearance, we will make the practice exam available for purchase.

You can update your practice exam, and we encourage you to do so. Vendors often publish updates to their exams, and we recommend that you keep your practice exam up to date with the real exam. Practice exams that are up to date and current with the topics and objectives of the real exam consistently outsell practice exams that have outdated or stale content. Please contact us for information regarding updating your exam when you are ready to update it.

The Boson Exam Environment (BEE) is primarily a practice exam delivery engine. If you are interested in working with Boson on other types of self-publishing, such as books, audio or video please contact us at authors@boson.com.

Activations

If you experience a problem while activating an exam, you can try the following solutions to resolve it.

Please submit a support ticket if you are having activation problems and provide as much information as you can so that we can assist you quickly.

  1. Verify that you have entered your user name and password correctly. Passwords are case-sensitive, so you should ensure that Caps Lock is not enabled when you enter your user name and password.

  2. Verify that you have entered the Activation Key correctly and that you are using the correct key for the correct product. You can copy and paste your Activation Key from the purchase receipt you received or by accessing your account on the Boson website and selecting the Purchase History tab. Activation Keys are version and product specific. Therefore, you will only be able to use the key to activate one product. For example, a key for the Boson ExSim-Max for Cisco 200-301 CCNA practice exam will not activate a 350-401 practice exam, because they are created for different products.

  3. Try temporarily disabling your User Account Control (UAC), firewall, and anti-virus applications. Occasionally, security software can cause an activation or installation problem. If the Boson Exam Environment (BEE) is still not able to access our activation server, you may need to consult your IT administrator and verify that your computer is not accessing the Internet via a proxy server.

  4. If your computer is running Windows 7 or Windows Vista, you might need to run the software as an administrator. You can accomplish this by right-clicking the icon you are using to launch the software and selecting Run as Administrator.

  5. If your computer is not able to access the Internet, you will not be able to activate an exam that is delivered through the BEE.

Boson Practice Labs

Customer Service

We support the following browsers:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 - 10
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Apple Safari
  • Opera
  • Google Chrome
Due to the technical differences between these browsers some do have known issues, for example Chrome has some problems with SSL connections generating a No data received, server sent no data error which requires a work-around to access the labs. Please see our technical documentation for more information.

Currently you are unable to save your work as each lab is designed to be autonomous from another therefore saving is normally unnecessary.

Technical Issues

Your account has not been created yet, please contact your course provider and make sure that your account has been created. If so and you are still receiving this message please tell us the name of your course provider and details of your account we shall contact them.

Please log a call with us and we will investigate what is wrong with your account.

Please try pressing the connect button, the device might not have powered up fully resulting in this error, if you still receive this error ensure you are running the latest version of Java which can be downloaded at www.java.com. Alternatively you can try connecting using the HTML5 client.

Occasionally all the labs of a particular course may be busy or being upgraded. You can enter your email address to be alerted when a lab is free, or you can come back at a later time and try again.

If you are detected as inactive then you will be prompted to see if you still want to use the lab, you will have 5 minutes to respond to continue using the lab, if we do not get a response then you shall be logged out of the lab. If you are using the lab and will need to be absent from your computer, please use the ‘Out to lunch’ function, this will give you an hour and a half until you will be logged out of the lab.

You should also refer back to your course content to ensure you understand that task that you are carrying out. If you feel there is an error in the content please let us know and we will rectify the issue if something is not correct.

We sometimes see this issue if you have connected to the lab using the new HTML5 client. To overcome this you can either:

  1. Use the java client and launch the devices in page.
  2. Use HTML 5 client and go to settings and chance the "launch MS device in separate window" to ON.

Boson Training

Customer Service

Contact an account executive to register for a course.
E-mail training@boson.com or call 877.333.3926 and press 2.

Travel and accommodations are not included.

There is a minimum of four (4) students required for us to provide on-site training.

We require 30 calendar days’ notice to reschedule or to cancel any registration (and provide refund for pre-payment). Enrollments must be rescheduled within one year of the original enrollment date or funds on account will be forfeited. Fees for software or other materials received by or ordered on behalf of the student are non-refundable. Failure to provide the required notification will result in 100% charge for the course. If a student does not attend a scheduled course without giving prior notification, the student’s funds will be forfeited and the student will not be allowed to reschedule. After the 30-day notification deadline has passed, only student substitutions are allowed; no refunds will be given. Student substitutions are allowed up to seven (7) days before class.

We keep the class size small to allow the instructor to provide individualized attention where needed.

You may take your certification exam when you are ready. We are a VUE testing center, and exams are offered on-site during Tampa courses. However, if you prefer to take the exam after your course, we will schedule it at a VUE testing center near you.

It is recommended that you bring a laptop with you so that you can continue to study in the evenings.

All of our instructors are Cisco Certified Instructors and have years of experience. To find out the specific instructor for your course, please contact an account executive at training@boson.com or 877.333.3926 and press 2.

Substitutions can be made at no charge up to seven (7) business day before the class start. You must provide the name and contact information of the substitute, along with any amended payment information available, such as purchase order or credit card information.

We accept Cisco Learning Credits.

Exam vouchers that are included with a course are valid for one (1) year from the class start date.

Casual or business attire is acceptable.

A single-user license for Boson's related ExSim-Max practice exam and/or NetSim network simulator products will be included with some training courses. Once the registration is complete, each student will be able to immediately download the software product and start preparing for the upcoming class. To see if the course that you are interested in attending includes ExSim-Max or NetSim software product, refer to the course description posted on this website, contact your account executive or e-mail training@boson.com.

The Boson NetSim Network Simulator is an application that simulates Cisco Systems' networking hardware and software and is designed to aid the user in learning the Cisco IOS command structure. Read more about NetSim.

ExSim-Max products are the best exam simulations (also referred to as practice exams) available in the industry. ExSim-Max is developed by Boson's team of subject-matter experts and put through a strenuous technical-editing and language-editing process. ExSim-Max is designed to simulate the complete exam experience, including topics covered, question types, question difficulty and time allowed, so you know what to expect. Read more about ExSim-Max.
